Recipes Using USDA Commodities

Provide your clients with meal ideas using the USDA commodities they receive at your food pantry. Having a hard time moving a food item? Sample a recipe using that food item during your distribution and provide your clients with the recipe so they can make it at home.

Have an abundance of apples due to trade mitigation and donations? The Washington State Apple Commission has 100's of delicious, nutritious, easy recipes on their website to help put those apples to good use.  

The Bold and Beautiful Book of Beans

Food banks and meal programs participating in TEFAP have an abundance of dried beans, however many clients don't know how to prepare them. Providing clients with cooking tips and recipes can help client utilize the dried beans. The Bold and Beautiful Book of Beans created with support from Washington State WIC staff and the Washington State Nutrition Education Workgroup, provides general guidelines for cooking dried beans as well yummy recipes.

Because these items may be unfamiliar to some people, providing clients with cooking tips and recipes can help clients utilize the dried pulses. SNAP-Ed Connection Recipe Finder:

The SNAP-Ed Connection Recipe Finder is a USDA database of recipes for use by nutrition educators working with the SNAP eligible population. The majority of recipes in the database were submitted by nutrition educators in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). Additional recipes are from government agencies or other health professionals and organizations.
