Cleaning and Sanitizing Farm Tools and Equipment

Interactive online learning modules were created to help educators and farm managers reinforce the basics of cleaning and sanitizing and how to test sanitizer concentration in solution using test strips or using titration.

Cleaning and sanitizing minimize the risk of cross-contamination from pathogenic microorganisms and are a valuable risk management strategy. Proper sanitization is not only a best practice, but it is a requirement of the FSMA Produce Safety Rule.

The interactive simulates how to follow proper monitoring procedures, evaluate results, and record findings. All content is available in English and Spanish.

Produce Safety Rule Posters

The following six bilingual posters, written in English and Spanish, help farmers train employees on how to minimize microbial contamination risk during growing, harvesting, packing and holding activities. Small fruits, including strawberries, blueberries and raspberries, are featured. The posters can be downloaded and printed in large format (up to 24" x 36") or ordered online to your Washington State home or office for approximately $25/poster set. Each set is printed at 20" x 30" on scrim vinyl, a flexible waterproof material that will last for several years outdoors.

Farmer Walks Podcast

We partnered with WSU Food Systems Program and Tilth Alliance to produce three podcasts where farmers discuss how they practically implement the Produce Safety Rule and other Good Agricultural Practices on their farm. Listen to more at farmwalks.org.

Management Strategies for Deterring Wildlife and Pests from Produce Fields and Packing Areas

Val Wall at Whitehorse Meadows Farm talks about her most significant pest and wildlife issues and how she protects her crops from animal intrusion and mitigates contamination issues when they arise. You’ll gain direct insight into her trials and tribulations and how she built an effective netting structure, ultimately increasing her marketable yield. Later, Karen Ullmann at WSDA will discuss what animal mitigation practices are required under the PSR.

Produce Safety Improvements While Scaling Up a Farm Business

Haley Olson-Wailand and Zach Wailand, owners of Dharma Ridge Farm, run a certified organic, diversified, wholesale produce operation. Their farm is Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) certified and they recently underwent their first WSDA Produce Safety Rule inspection. Haley and Zach discuss land access, produce safety improvements, and how they’ve scaled up their farm business over time. Later in the episode, Connie Fisk, manager of the WSDA Produce Safety Program, describes what farms should expect during inspections and how to prepare for common issues inspectors are observing in the field.

Employee Training Practices for Produce Sold to Farmers Markets

Osman Ruiz Amador, owner of Amador Farms, runs a diversified fruit and vegetable direct market operation with his family. His farm focuses on selling direct to consumers through farmers markets throughout the state. Osman discusses his experiences in agriculture and how he trains everyone working on the farm and at markets on produce safety standards and practices. Later in the episode, Jacqui Gordon Nunez, shares additional resources and recommendations for growers on food safety training for employees and details about what FSMA and the Produce Safety Rule means for producers. The episode is recorded in Spanish and translated into English.
