Farm to School in Washington


There are incredible Farm to School projects and initatives happening all throughout Washington State! School cafeterias are featuring salad bars and local ingredients in lunches, farmers are hosting students at their farms and are guest speakers in classrooms, parents and teachers are working with students to build school gardens, students are creating delicious seasonal recipes and food grown in schools gardens are appearing in school meals.

According to WSDA Farm to School Surveys, USDA Farm to School Census and Washington State Farm to School Network:

  • 49% of school districts in Washington State participate in Farm to School
  • 91 school districts bought ingredients directly from Washington farmers between 2013-2018
  • $17,440,300 was spent on local food by Washington schools in the 2013-14 school year
  • At least 288 school gardens exist in Washington State
  • 72 Early Care & Education providers participated in Farm to ECE activities in 2017

In 2018, the Washington State Farm to School Network was formed to support the work of over 200 member school districts, farmers and food producers, teachers, students, non-profits, regional and state agencies working on farm to school. WSDA Farm to School and various lead organizations involved in farm to school in the state helped form the network.
