2018 Eradication

The Washington State Department of Agriculture treated about 1,300 acres to eradicate reproducing populations of spongy moth.

The eradication consisted of treating two areas in the state. One area was about 300 acres near Graham. The other was about 1,000 acres on and surrounding Naval Base Kitsap - Bangor.

Below you will find maps of the treatment areas at Graham and Bangor. Click on the maps to download pdfs.

Environmental Assessments

As part of WSDA's spongy moth eradication proposal, state and federal environmental assessments were conducted. These environmental assessments and findings are available below:

2017 Trapping

Our 20118 eradication plan was based on our 2017 trapping season. We conducted our annual trapping program to protect our environment by monitoring for new introductions or growing populations of spongy moths in Washington.

About 30,000 traps were placed throughout the state in 2017, resulting in catching 117 male spongy moths in traps that year - the highest number since 1995. In addition to the moths caught in traps, WSDA also found an infestation of actively reproducing spongy moths, including 100 live females and 13 live males, all of which were collected by hand.
