Animal Identification Tags

Who can get official Electronic Identification (EID) tags?

Producers can purchase official 840 EID tags (previously known as RFID tags) and tag applicators directly from livestock eartag distributors or talk to your local veterinarian.

Note: in order to purchase 840 EID tags, you must have a Premises Identification Number (PIN) assigned. 
Washington’s accredited veterinarians can obtain regulatory tags and forms from WSDA.

How to get EID tags

  1. If you have a Premises Identification Number, have forgot, or are unsure if you have one, please call (360) 725-5493 or (360) 902-7566.
  2. Order Tags from a manufacturer or distributor listed below.  

*Note: Additional manufacturers and distributors for 840 EID tags are available by searching online for "USDA 840 Tags."

Official Electronic Identification (EID) tag


Official 840 EID for different species. Commonly used by accredited veterinarians for regulatory work in cattle. Producers can order this tag from different tag distributors.

A Federal Premises Identification Number (PIN) is required to order AIN Tags

Brucellosis official EID tag


Official 840 EID tag applied by accredited veterinarians when brucellosis vaccinating.



Non-840 official EID for certain imported cattle and bison


Only used to identify imported cattle and bison that lost their country’s official ID and need official identification.



 

2024 round green tags

Dairy Green tag


Washington’s Licensed Grade A milk producer option in lieu of a brand inspection. The visual only (triangle) green tag cannot be used on calves after Nov. 4, 2024. Calves identified prior to Nov. 5, 2024 may keep the tag for the lifetime of the animal.

National Uniform Eartagging System (NUES) tag


Commonly called Brite or Silver-Brite Tag. Silver metal tag used by accredited veterinarians to identify livestock. Cannot be used on cattle and bison after Nov. 4, 2024. Cattle and Bison identified prior to Nov. 5, 2024, may keep the tag for the lifetime of the animal.

NUES Brucellosis tag


Orange metal tag applied by accredited veterinarians when vaccinating for brucellosis. Cannot be used on cattle and bison after Nov. 4, 2024. Cattle and Bison identified prior to Nov. 5, 2024, may keep the tag for the lifetime of the animal.

Trichomoniasis tag


Visual tag use by accredited veterinarians to identify bulls.

The Trichomoniasis year is defined as September 1 and runs through August 31, so application of the appropriate tag color will change each year on September 1.  Previous year Trichomoniasis tags will be removed and replaced with the tag consistent with the current year’s test.  Year-to-year continuity of bovine Trichomoniasis identification should be maintained through the recorded official ID tag number.
 
Trichomoniasis tag colors repeat every 5 years as follows:
