NPDES PERMIT FOR AQUATIC NOXIOUS WEED CONTROL



​The Washington State Department of Agriculture holds the Aquatic Noxious Weed Management National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) General permit issued by Ecology under authority of the federal Clean Water Act.

This permit is for use of herbicides to control some aquatic noxious weeds in Washington State. The permit addresses use of herbicides to control marine weeds (such as Spartina), and freshwater emerged weeds (such as purple loosestrife).

 

Integrated Management

The Aquatic Noxious Weed Control General Permit controls freshwater and marine noxious weeds in Washington. It covers the indirect discharge of herbicides, adjutants, and marker dyes into estuaries, marine areas, wetlands, along lake shorelines, rivers, streams, and other wet areas. Integrated Pest Management is a decision making process using the most appropriate control method, or a combination of those methods, to control a targeted weed species with the least impact to the environment and with the greatest impact to the weed.
