Washington Water and Agriculture

WSDA’s mission is to support the viability and vitality of agriculture while protecting consumers, public health, and the environment. Every crop that grows needs water – water which can be a limited resource for producers. We work to understand the challenges associated with water availability and agricultural production.

WSDA’s role in supporting agricultural production

WSDA serves as a stakeholder in water supply projects to represent agricultural producers' needs and challenges throughout Washington State.


  • Irrigation is necessary for the production of most crops, especially east of the Cascades.
  • 80% of Washington water withdrawals are for agriculture.
  • Droughts affect the state's agricultural production and have become more frequent in recent years (2015, 2019, 2021).
