Farm to Food Pantry (F2FP)

Farm to Food Pantry (F2FP) is a state legislative initiative that started in 2014. The initiative was inspired by small farmers across Washington after a series of roundtables hosted by WSDA Food Assistance and Harvest Against Hunger, a non-profit based in Seattle. The initiative provides funding to hunger relief organizations to create wholesale contracts with local farmers. Farm to Food Pantry supports Washington's small farmers with new wholesale markets and provides nutrient-dense food to food-insecure Washingtonians.

What is the Farm to Food Pantry Initiative?

Farm to Food Pantry (F2FP) is a partnership between WSDA Food Assistance and Harvest Against Hunger (HAH), founded in 2014. The initiative helps strengthen community-based food systems by supporting local farmers, hunger relief organizations, and their clients. The primary goal of F2FP is to support local, small-scale farmers while increasing access to nutrient-dense and nourishing foods for Washingtonians facing food insecurity.

Hunger relief organizations apply and receive funding to set up wholesale contracts and purchase from local farmers. Since hunger relief organizations do their own purchasing, food banks can tailor purchases to client needs and build long-term relationships with local growers. These connections encourage farmers, farmers markets, and food hubs to donate unsold produce and allow for gleaning, further improving client access to healthy foods. Participating organizations also leverage their F2FP funding to solicit matching funds from community donors.

As WSDA's main partner, HAH provides technical support through monthly cohort meetings, templates for farm contracting, fundraising resources, tips for client and community engagement, and supplemental funding for food purchases. Local F2FP agencies may be eligible for additional support from HAH’s AmeriCorps VISTA programs.

F2FP Photovoice Study

In August of 2024, a Photovoice study was conducted to gather insights and feedback about F2FP directly from food pantry clients. This study was carried out in the Northeast region of Washington, with F2FP subagency Northeast Washington Hunger Coalition. The study resulted in 4 main findings and 6 correlated recommendations. A detailed report of the study can be download below. This work was funded through SNAP-Ed.
