Funding Grapevine Industry Research

Do you have a research project that could benefit the grapevine nursery industry in the state of Washington?  Grapevine research is funded by assessments on sales of grapevines in Washington, collected annually, and is distributed by decision of the WSDA Grapevine Advisory Committee.

Applications are due annually by January 31.

**Funding for grapevine industry research projects is not available for FY26.  Please check back in Fall 2025.**

Grapevine Research Priorities

Funding priorities of the WSDA Grapevine Advisory Committee follow the rules set in RCW 15.14.015 and are stated below.  Proposals submitted should be relevant to current growers and nursery practices and focus on certification/nursery program needs.

  • Best practices for the certification of planting stock for freedom from infection by plant pests, viruses and virus-like agents.
  • Improving processes and criteria for participation in pathogen tested grapevine certification programs, including setting tolerances, site requirements, inspection, testing, exclusion and removal of diseased, infected, defective, or off-type plants.
  • Research and survey for emerging diseases and pests and their potential impact on grapevine nurseries.
  • Education and outreach to Washington grapevine growers and vineyardists (wine, juice and table) about the benefits of utilizing virus tested planting stock, and/or meeting state grape pest quarantine requirements.
  • Production, utilization, and testing of micro propagated plants under a certified planting stock program.
  • Best practices for cultivation, storing, distributing, and processing certified planting stock.
  • Improvements and support for the G1 foundation grapevine plantings at WSU’s Clean Plant Center Northwest.
  • Inventorying, labeling, grading, and packing of planting stock entered into virus certification.

After the end of the fiscal year (June 30) each project's progress or final report can be obtained by contacting WSDA Plant Services at (360) 902-1922
