Noxious Weeds

Millions of dollars are spent each year by public entities and private homeowners to control weeds. WSDA is responsible for coordinating statewide efforts to control purple loosestrife and to eradicate spartina, both non-native aquatic weeds. Spartina is an aquatic weed that has a large impact on the coastal regions of our state. Purple Loosestrife is a semi-aquatic weed that infests virtually every county of the state to some degree. Both of these weeds infest environmentally sensitive habitat by crowding out native species.

WSDA works closely with the State Noxious Weed Control Board and is responsible for noxious weed control in counties without weed boards. The State Noxious Weed Control Board sets control priorities and coordinates educational and control activities of weed districts, county weed boards, and state and federal agencies.
