Heavy Metal Test Requirements


WSDA requires registrants to send fertilizer samples out to a laboratory for heavy metals analysis. Include the Heavy Metals Test Requirements guidance document when sending out your samples to a laboratory. Include the following information when submitting laboratory results to WSDA:
  • Method of sample preparation
  • Method of analysis 
  • Units (PPM, mg/kg)
  • Minimum detection limits
  • Level of each metal detected.

Follow the steps in the calculator to determine if your product passes the Washington standards for heavy metals.

Heavy Metal Analysis Exemption

If your product meets any of these three exemptions, you do not need to perform a metals analysis.

  1. Anhydrous ammonia or products derived solely from anhydrous ammonia dissolved in water (unless waste-derived).
  2. Customer formula mix.
  3. If All of the following apply:
    1. You are repacking a single chemical compound (i.e. urea, MAP, DAP, muriate of potash or similar products.
    2. The single chemical compound is already registered in Washington by your supplier.
    3. You do not amend or blend the product with any additional materials.
