Mitigation Measures

Federal agencies have made progress in developing practical, flexible, feasible, and effective mitigation measures to reduce the risk of future jeopardy to listed species or adverse impacts on their critical habitat. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) currently has a Mitigation Menu webpage outlining mitigation strategies and point systems.

How will this impact pesticide users?

Many pesticide product labels will have new label statements requiring runoff/erosion mitigation and spray dift reduction and could direct pesticide applicators to acquire mitigation points before they apply the pesticide. Mitigation requirements will appear on the product labels and may refer pesticide applicators to EPA's Mitigation Menu webpage. Some pesticide labels will require applicators to obtain an Endangered Species Protection Bulletin for the product on the Bulletin’s Live Two! website.

How do I know if Runoff/Erosion or Ecological Spray Drift Buffers Mitigation is Required?

Step 1: Check your labels before making any pesticide applications.
Step 2: If the label references that mitigation points are required visit EPA’s mitigation menu website to select your options. The product does not require mitigation if none are mentioned.
Step 3: Follow all label instructions.

Explore mitigation measure options and learn more about the mitigation point system. Due to Washington's crop diversity and terrain variability, pesticide users are encouraged to consult with local specialists to adopt mitigation measures.

Mitigation Measures

Pesticide Run Off/Erosion Mitigation Point System

The Run Off/Erosion Mitigation Points Calculation Worksheet helps pesticide applicators determine whether the necessary level of mitigation or points have been earned before applying a pesticide product.

Spray Drift Buffers

The Pesticide Ecological Spray Drift Buffer Calculation Worksheet assists pesticide applicators in determining the size of required buffers before applying a pesticide product.

USDA Web Soil Survey

Determine your soil type to calculate your run off/erosion mitigation points using EPA's mitigation calculator.

EPA Educational Resources Toolbox

This catalog of resources created by EPA includes documents which can help applicators achieve their mitigation points required to make pesticide applications. EPA will continue adding new materials to the toolbox as they are developed.
