What do you need today?

Is tomato fruit borer lurking in your garden? Or is Scots pine blister rust on your tree? Early detection is critical for protecting the state’s forests, parks, farms, and gardens from invasive pests and diseases. Read more about it in our blog.
The Washington State Department of Agriculture periodically seeks help from community members who are interested in protecting our state from invasive pests and diseases. By allowing the department to place insect traps or examine plants on your property, you can help us ensure the early detection and management of potential threats to Washington’s agriculture and environment. Plant Pathology and Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory

The Plant Pathology and Molecular Diagnostics Lab (PPMDL) is a cutting edge diagnostic laboratory that performs molecular, serological, and morphological testing to support the Pest Program’s mission to protect the agriculture, environment and natural resources of Washington State by preventing the introduction and spread of high risk invasive insects, terrestrial snails, plant diseases and noxious weeds.

The PPMDL supports this mission by providing testing for domestic and international export certifications, conducting early pest detection surveys in partnership with the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and collaborating on research projects aimed to increase identification capacity and strengthen pest detection technology.

The PPMDL is a member of the National Plant Diagnostic Network and is certified by the National Plant Protection Laboratory Accreditation Program to perform specific regulatory testing. When pests of regulatory concern are introduced to WA, PPMDL responds adeptly to provide rapid data and resources to support response efforts.

Since 2003, PPMDL has been awarded numerous USDA Plant Protection Act grants and has partnered with a multitude of federal, state, and university cooperators to safeguard agriculture.
