Fall 2022 Grant: Awarded Organizations
Entity Name | Funded Amount | Project Type | Project Size | County | Brief Project Description |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Anacortes Food Coop | $109,310 | Marketplace | Small | Skagit | Anacortes Food Coop currently sells local produce, but the amount we can purchase from farmers is limited by our lack of proper storage. This grant funding would allow us to immensely increase our capacity, especially as we approach the autumn harvest season. This grant assistance would chiefly help us to (1) purchase equipment such as reliable coolers and freezers for storing an increased variety of locally sourced food to keep it in top condition and extend shelf life, (2) build out a commercial kitchen to create value-added products, and (3) acquire an improved purchasing and inventory system. |
Apple Cart Fruits | $124,900 | Produce | Small | Okanogan | This project would complete the kitchen expansion to house already owned commercial fruit dryers, upgrade the electrical service to the site, add in required restroom facilities for employees, and purchase needed equipment to effectively freeze and distribute apples and soft fruit to regional retailers within Washington. Facility upgrades are necessary to be in full compliance with food processing license and allow expanded processing activities for other local farmers. |
Baker/Potter | $93,177 | Grain | Small | Mason | The bakery is currently operating at capacity with the equipment and space we have. We make an incredibly unique product and would like to reach a wider market. We need a bigger oven, a bigger bakery, and a mixer. These improvements will enable us to expand our reach to new farmers markets and open the door to wholesale distribution of bread and local flour. |
Balloon Roof Baking Company LLC | $94,000 | Grain | Small | Pierce | We will purchase a new steam deck oven, and a used vehicle (cargo van) with outdoor market booth kit to serve farmers markets in the South Sound with fresh bread products made from wheat grown in Washington (primarily Skagit Valley). These markets include Gig Harbor, Dupont, Orting, and Puyallup WA among others. |
BCS Livestock | $205,000 | Marketplace | Small | Okanogan | If awarded, grant funds would be used to purchase a refrigerated delivery truck, display refrigerators and freezers, equipment for a commercial kitchen and for increased marketing. This project would allow safe transport of food over greater distances to access more potential customers. The funds would allow us to increase storage at the pick-up locations and provide producers with an opportunity to turn fresh products into value-added products that can be stored and sold year round. Grant funds would allow the MVFS to increase capacity, expand marketing and distribution area and create more year-round availability of products from small farms. |
Beyond Pickles LLC | $74,800 | Produce | Small | Franklin | We propose to build local capacity to process and distribute locally grown vegetables to local food supply chains in Eastern Washington. To expand our operation with this grant, we propose to purchase a walk-in cooler as well as a larger-capacity food processor. The walk-in cooler would be installed at a new facility with several local food businesses that we will be moving to in fall 2022 located at 713 9th St., Benton City, WA and the food processor will be portable. We would be amenable to partial funding if full funding is not available. |
Blackjack Valley Farms | $11,400 | Meat | Small | Kitsap | Funding will increase capacity of our farm's poultry processing facility and allow us to offer both whole chickens and part birds to satisfy customer demand and expand our market. Parting chickens out also reduces bulkiness and makes storing frozen birds more efficient, allowing us to process more birds per session. Equipment needed to support increased production capacity includes an Ultravac vacuum chamber and supply of bags for packaging and a two-door reach in refrigerator to storing fresh birds prior to packaging. Shelving for walk in freezer to increase storage, ability to sort and rotate product and hold packaged orders. Diversifying farm products and increasing efficiency will help us recover from pandemic related loss of business. |
Blue Skies Farm of Puget Island, LLC | $201,723 | Produce | Small | Wahkiakum | This project will fund the conversion of an existing barn into a resilient food storage and processing facility. We plan to construct and equip a commercial kitchen, construct dry storage space, purchase a walk-in cooler/freezer for storage of raw and value-added products, and construct a small farm office in the facility to expand our sales and marketing. We also plan to install a grid-independent solar system with battery back-up to ensure continuity of power for food storage. To strengthen the broader local food system, we will make excess storage and processing capacity available to other Wahkiakum food producers. |
Bridges Orchards | $37,511 | Produce | Small | Chelan | Replace 30 year old compressor and condensing unit with Trenton Refrigeration Unit. Purchase a CiderSure 2500 Mini UV Cider Processor for 2022 fresh cider production. |
Bumblebee Farm | $67,600 | Produce | Small | King | We'd like to purchase an electric delivery van so that we can reach more customers in a more economical and environmentally friendly way. We'd like to add a refrigeration unit to the van for improved food safety, enabling longer delivery routes. We'd also like to purchase a scale and harvest/storage totes to grow our business, and a sanitizer mixing system for improved food safety in washing and packing. |
Cabrera Farms | $174,976 | Produce | Small | Skagit | Through this project, we will expand distribution capacity and efficiency with the purchase of a refrigerated box truck, a forklift, an electric pallet jack, and storage bins for transporting produce. Furthermore, we will expand on-farm cold storage capacity with the purchase of a customized walk-in cooler in a shipping container. We will also purchase digital and top scales to increase the accuracy and efficiency of packing and selling product. Finally, we will expand the efficiency and scale of our fall and winter vegetable production with the purchase of a wash line and barrel washer. |
CasaCano Farms LLC | $165,953 | Produce | Small | Spokane | Our proposed project is to complete our produce processing room and farm store (direct to consumer retail of farm products), to purchase a refrigerated delivery van, and to purchase an in-store POS system and integrate it with our current website/online store. Completing the farm store and purchasing a refrigerated van expands access to local farm products, as well as provides an outlet for our own and other farm's products. Completing the processing room enables us to get our WSDA processing license, and helps us improve our food safety standards when washing and packing produce. |
Center Valley Orchards llc. | $101,000 | Produce | Small | Jefferson | Our project is aimed at significantly adding capacity and resiliency to our current infrastructure which supports multiple small farm and food producers here on the Olympic peninsula. We are currently unable to accommodate the farming and food production needs of all of our farm and business partners operating on our 50-acre farm, due to limits in basic infrastructure. We would like to add frozen storage space, and add food processing equipment to our commercial kitchen, and install a backup electrical generator to allow for operation during the inevitable annual power outages that shut down all of our operations. |
Chesed Farms, LLC | $40,500 | Produce | Small | Walla Walla | With this grant we will upgrade our existing sprinter van with a refrigeration package, and add an additional and larger walk-in cooler. This will allow us to store and distribute our expanding quantity of produce products. Additionally, it will provide capacity for us to collaborate and work with other local producers to distribute their products within the Walla Walla valley. |
Chimacum Valley Dairy | $22,800 | Dairy | Small | Jefferson | Funding will be dedicated to purchasing equipment to increase volume and sustain quality while increasing product output. The primary goal is to increase volume to decrease wholesale prices to expand our sales territory through a distributor. |
Clallam Canning Company | $51,180 | Produce | Small | Clallam | This project enables Clallam Canning Company (CCC) to add an employee bathroom and expanded dry and cold storage capacity to its existing processing kitchen. Planned upgrades include conversion of an existing garage to include a bathroom and storage area connected by an internal doorway to the processing kitchen. In addition, the project will include dishwasher installation, mobile refrigeration, and purchase of miscellaneous processing equipment for shared use. The purpose of these upgrades is to re-open the CCC with a more sustainable revenue stream, while providing affordable kitchen space to local farmers and microprocessors; and to host public food preservation workshops. |
Coffee Creek Community & Gardens | $50,165 | Meat | Small | Lewis | We plan to build a small poultry processing facility on our farm in order to more effectively meet the needs of our customers. We will purchase a prefabricated metal structure and concrete pad to house the processing equipment that we will purchase, such as killing cones, scalder, plucker, stainless prep tables, sharps and sharpeners, and sinks, eliminating our current need to rent equipment from the local conservation district and relieving us of their scheduling constraints. We believe this will be an asset to other small-scale poultry producers we are collaborating with in our area. |
Conway Family Farm, LLC | $70,162 | Dairy | Small | Clark | This project will purchase equipment needed to expand production capacity and distribution area and channels of value-added products. Finally, the 8 x 8 walk-in cooler will store flowers that are high in ethylene separate from our vegetables. |
Del Fox Meats | $400,000 | Meat | Large | Skagit | Given the high demand for DFM’s USDA processing services and their current site’s limited expansion capacity, DFM requests $740,367 to purchase Frielsa’s two USDA-compliant ‘delivery-ready floor-model’ units. DFM has done a substantial amount of preparation, put $50,000 down and secured additional financing, allocated their own liquid capital for these expenditures and purchased $200,000+ in processing equipment in Q1 2022. They have prepared to incur the substantial financial burden this expansion would require - however WSDA support would allow DFM to reallocate those funds for workforce development, wage increases, equipment upgrades and producer service improvements. |
Downtown Assoc of Yakima | $150,000 | Marketplace | Small | Yakima | The current Yakima Farmers Market operates on a public street with no water or utility infrastructure, and must be totally "constructed" and removed each week. Through a partnership formed in 2021 with the three local Rotary Clubs, the Yakima Rotary Trust, Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital, and private donors, a new Farmers' Marketplace has been designed, and ground breaking for the first phase of construction took place August 2, 2022. Funding is sought to complete the entire project. |

This will help us increase our inventory while maintaining our current energy usage. Upgrade our facility by adding an insulated storage area for our finished product. We plan on getting electrical assistance with this shed to add lights and plugs. This will also help keep down transportation costs and make it easier to keep track of our inventory. Upgrade our packaging to a more professional and higher-quality mylar bag. This would help maintain the integrity of the product for longer-term storage and make our product more desirable-looking to customers. |
Eastern Washington Community Dairy | $455,802 | Dairy | Large | Stevens | The Columbia Community Creamery project includes milk processing, packaging, marketing, sales, and distribution of local value added milk to increase the resiliency of our regional food system. We plan to buy a delivery vehicle to allow expansion of our retail and wholesale distribution across the state, and addition of 1-2 more partner farmers. |
Evergreen Creamery LLC | $203,000 | Dairy | Small | Klickitat | The intent of this project is to increase the cheese production capacity of Evergreen Creamery, and in turn purchase more milk from Trout Lake licensed dairies. In addition to increasing production, we intend to open a creamery storefront in Trout Lake that can facilitate local warehousing & distribution of dairy products from all farms and producers in Trout Lake. Due to the remoteness and 1-way-in road access, no refrigerated distributors will make the trip for the current volume of products, we intend to purchase a refrigerated truck to complement our warehouse to help local producers get to larger distribution hubs in Washington State. |
Everly Farms | $18,900 | Meat | Small | Stevens | We would be interested in a walk in freezer to be able to offer customers a "piece meal" option. Also to have a cooler with rails. This way if we have to harvest an animal on site, we would have the option to do so. |
Farms For Life | $41,000 | Marketplace | Small | King | Farms for Life will be purchasing a high-capacity cooler to store our produce from our farm partners while in transit to our nonprofit or charitable partners. Fat Turnip Farms, LLC | $139,000 | Produce | Small | Kitsap | Our largest challenge is getting a larger percentage of our product off the farm and out to the broader market since our farm is located in a more remote part of Kitsap County with no public transportation access thus limiting the number of customers able to purchase from our farm. Our biggest need is vehicles to expand our market opportunities by transporting our produce from our farm to various market venues, restaurants, and other purchasers that are not direct retail sales from our farm in a semi-rural area with limited population. This includes a refrigerated truck and box truck, which will also double as storage. Other critical needs include product refrigeration at the home farm market,(thus the need for refrigerated tables and coolers). Our farm has not recovered from a loss of revenue at our farm stand and markets due to the limits of the pandemic. In essence, this funding will improve Fat Turnip Farm's ability to transport, move, and store our locally grown produce and foods. This additional transportation infrastructure would support our farm goals of expanding to include products like pickles, salsas and other value-added items in our sales. Initially, these items would be produced off-farm and refrigerated transportation of raw vegetables to a licensed processing facility would allow us to follow food safety guidelines and maintain produce in the best condition. |
Finnriver Grain Co. | $494,000 | Grain | Large | Jefferson | As the primary grower/processor of organic grain crops on the north Olympic Peninsula, Finnriver Grain Co. seeks to continue serving regional food system resilience by providing nutrient-dense and diverse organic grains for our local market through stone milled flours, sprouted grain flours, pastas and bread. With this funding, we seek to diversify and grow capacity to process and add value to our grains and to widen their regional availability to markets, restaurants and bakeries, as well as through direct retail. Grant funding will allow us to acquire scale-appropriate milling/malting/bakery equipment; upgrade necessary processing and distribution infrastructure; develop brand packaging; and increase staffing. Our goal is to increase farm/food system recovery and resilience in our region. |

Four Elements Farm | $79,875 | Produce | Small | Pierce | We would purchase a 14-16ft refrigerated box truck. We need a larger, safer delivery vehicle in order to get the produce we already have demand for, out to the region. With the weather trending hotter, the delivery vehicle needs to be refrigerated both for food safety and to enhance the life of the produce. |
Front Porch Farm LLC | $37,117 | Produce | Small | Stevens | With grant funds, we would purchase and assemble a new walk-in cooler with a wider door. As the food box programs in our area have grown, we are in need of more cooler space to better serve our community. Our cooler is the necessary piece of equipment that allows us to cool and store ours and other small farmers' produce until it can be distributed. |
Fruitful Valley Farm | $81,553 | Meat | Small | Lewis | I plan to purchase an enclosed trailer and outfit it with the necessary tools to safely process up to 500 birds per day. Full Bloom Farm | $60,770 | Produce | Small | Whatcom | We have outgrown our current post-harvest processing and storage capacity, and have an increasing market base we are striving to serve. Our proposed project will increase and improve our physical infrastructure and allow us to expand our operations in a food-safe and responsible way. Contracted improvements to the barn are the primary use of funds as well as equipment that will be used to increase our post-harvest, storage and merchandising ability. |
Full Tilth Farm, LLC | $42,000 | Produce | Small | Kitsap | We would like to build a quality pack-and-prep shed to ensure our long-term capacity to wash, bunch, package, store, and distribute farm produce. Our current setup is limited, the ad-hoc equipment is aging, and our walk-in cooler is suffering from weather exposure. This facility will collect our post-harvest activities in a single location near our market vehicle with improved infrastructure and additional covered space for work and storage. |
Get Real LLC | $75,848 | Marketplace | Small | Spokane | Get Real will purchase a refrigerated delivery van that can accommodate thirty 18"x12"x12" boxes on four shelves in two different temperature regulated compartments and must have a side and rear door, and be capable of rural and urban travel. Girl Meets Dirt | $146,270 | Produce | Small | San Juan | With these funds Girl Meets Dirt will increase processing and production capacity and improve worker safety. Essential equipment updates would allow us to increase our post-harvest processing yields, work smarter, safer, and more efficiently. The new 11,910sqft structure will feature a GAP-certified wash/pack facility, extensive cold and dry storage and accessible loading from the field and for distribution. It will also provide a learning environment for VF staff to provide hands-on technical assistance in post-harvest and marketing best practices. |
Haki Farmers Collective | $58,650 | Produce | Small | Thurston | Haki is a nonprofit organization based in Lacey, WA that seeks to bolster sustainable farming knowledge present in Black, Migrant, and Indigenous communities and enhance food sovereignty through skill-building opportunities, growing and distributing fresh grown foods where they are most needed. Haki creates spaces in which vulnerable communities can garden in urban settings. Haki also aims to increase understanding of BIPOC needs with other BIPOC farmers and consumers. The proximity of Joint Base Lewis McChord (JBLM) with the city of Lacey has drawn a large population of veterans and active service members in the South Sound area. To date, Haki has produced over 11,600 lbs of food at the Haki Community Food Garden based in our Lacey ¾-acre site. The site has supported a community U-pick program, Community Based Agriculture, hunger relief project for BIPOC and food insecure communities as well as provided healthier and culturally-relevant fresh produce to the Thurston County Food Bank, where the garden is located. Haki’s involvement has been in response to COVID19 impacts on communities of color and the need to bridge some gaps in our food system. With the support of WSDA We Feed WA program Haki has designed and run a food distribution program in partnership with many producers, aggregators, and community organizations such as the African Community Housing and Development (ACHD), Together! program, Wa Na Wari Seattle, Titan TCC Food Pantry, Children’s Home Seattle, Nature Farmacy, GRuB, Thurston County Food Bank (TCFB), Shelton Youth Connection etc. Just between February and July 2022, Haki has served over 4000 families (a total of 56,000 lbs) with our monthly fresh produce basket throughout the Puget Sound area who live in food-insecure communities. We encourage our partners to deepen their relationships with our farmers while creating food access. |

Additional walk-in cooler: increased storage space will bolster year-round sales, including what we can offer in the high-demand winter season. 4. Office container: proper indoor space allows us to conduct sales not in our home, and close to packing shed. 5. Improved driveway: heighten food safety by cutting down on dust and mud around our packing shed. |
High and Dry Farm | $26,416 | Produce | Small | Snohomish | The proposed project will provide electrical service to, and more fully equip, High and Dry Farm's wash/pack building and will construct and equip an adjoining walk-in cooler. Our present rudimentary infrastructure for wash/pack activity and refrigeration prevents us from increasing our production of vegetables as our wash/pack building lacks electrical service and lighting, and our commercial refrigerator is too small and is inconveniently distant from the wash/pack facility. Electrical service to our wash/pack shed will support the proposed adjoining walk-in cooler and will support installation of motorized equipment for produce washing and drying. |

Iggy's Foods LLC | $242,500 | Produce | Small | Kitsap | Kitsap County has an acute shortage of both cold storage and licensed food-processing facilities for storage and processing of local foods. We have access to land in Kingston, a key transportation point in Kitsap, on which to place containerized cold storage and food processing facilities adjacent to our own new business location which can be used to reinforce and grow our own value-added food production, while providing space for local partner farmers and food businesses, and enable cross-docking to facilitate intra-state food hub connections. |
Jabe's Beef, LLC. | $72,624 | Meat | Small | Stevens | We are requesting grant money to purchase a freezer delivery box truck to distribute beef to customers locally. Jacobs Agro | $100,000 | Produce | Small | King | Jacobs Agro plans to develop his website and purchase a refrigerated cargo van. The web presence is crucial for marketing and to bring a web presence to the operation. Because of the distances Mark must travel between farms and clients, a refrigerated van would be a game changer for Jacobs Agro. It would greatly reduce time and travel miles giving real cost savings with reduced fuel use and fewer automotive repairs. This will in turn increase profits for Jacobs Agro. Mark estimates that he will save 5 hours each delivery day traveling between farm locations and clientele. This will allow him the time he needs to grow more, market and expand his reach. |
King's Quality Meats LLC | $250,000 | Meat | Large | Asotin | Purchase the Mobile Slaughter unit KQM is currently renting. Increased production means KQM will need more room for freezing the product and short term storage. |

This will enable the efficient and safe production and packaging of fresh milk for daily stocking of our farm stand and local markets. |
Lee Family Farm | $20,000 | Produce | Small | King | The lack of cold storage has resulted in thousands of pounds of produce being thrown out each year. Without cold storage, we hurry to harvest everything at their peak, but if we can't do it within the short window, we lose the wave of crop. Sometimes we may harvest the wave in time, but we run into the issue of having no where to store them properly then we risk poor product or spoilage. We are asking for a cooler unit to properly store our produce between delivering to our customers and to extend the season. |
Lilac City Harvest | $41,500 | Produce | Small | Spokane | In order to process, store, and sell at higher volumes, a larger post-harvest facility is needed, as well as updates to the existing farm store. Improvements to the infrastructure will include a concrete pad, commercial carport structure, shipping container for storage, and walk-in cooler for post-harvest needs. Improving the existing irrigation and adding the PaperPot growing system will expedite production and improve overall crop success; lay gravel for better access to the parking area, upgrade the point of sale system and add refrigerators for improved product merchandising. Link Lab Artisan Meats DBA Jones Family Farms | $100,000 | Meat | Small | San Juan | Our intention is to develop on-farm meat, produce and fruit processing infrastructure to maximize farm and community food security. We have learned during Covid how vulnerable our island community is to disruptions in the food supply, as well as access to services and resources generally available on the mainland. Ongoing deterioration in the Washington State Ferry system and the runaway inflation of food and energy pricing has underlined this vulnerability. We aim to use this grant to harness the knowledge we have developed these past decades running Jones Family Farms and Link Lab Artisan Meats to maximize our island foodshed, secure the cold chain, minimize carbon inputs in our production and build our farm and community food shed resilience. |
Lucky Shoe Farm | $32,899 | Meat | Small | Okanogan | We will improve our existing commercial building to create a WSDA custom slaughter establishment and custom meat facility, in alignment with halal (Muslim) standards. This requires upgrades to our slaughter pens and equipment for handling the carcass, as well as increasing cold storage and transportation capacity. The facility will also be a suitable location for USDA mobile slaughter and retail exempt processing should those services become available, and is designed to accommodate semi-trailer access. This project addresses an unmet need in our area for a certified slaughter establishment, both for farmers who are marketing custom-exempt meat, and for ethnic groups with specific slaughter requirements. It will improve resiliency and strengthen infrastructure in our farming community, and allow access to currently under-served markets. |
Lum Farm LLC | $187,750 | Dairy | Small | San Juan | Project will focus on infrastructure improvements to reduce labor inputs and increase capacity and resiliency in food production, value-added steps, and distribution. Mama Bird Farm | $230,697 | Produce | Small | Island | We are looking for funds to help us build a proper pack house for the produce we grow on our farm. This pack house would have a large walk in cooler, washing, packing station, dry storage for seed and packing materials, and an outside covered area for equipment. This facility would allow adequate room for our farm to grow and function properly, and in a more sanitary, efficient and safe way for our employees and ourselves, and therefore better meeting the needs of our community and our staff. Having a large functional space to work in will allow our business to grow in a more sustainable way thus keeping the viability of our business alive. We have been farming for 10 years, and the cost to develop raw land, dig a well, build roads, build hoop houses, bring in power etc. has been a lot! We hope to continue to serve our community fresh local produce, but having a facility where we can efficiently run our business out of, would eliminate a lot of stress and help the proper every day functions of our farm so much. Construction of a pack house would entail a lot of different parts such as site development/ excavation work, road and utility work, pouring a foundation, purchasing materials, hiring a construction crew to build the pack house and outfitting the inside (walk in cooler, plumbing, electrical, sheetrock etc.) |
Mariposa Farm | $171,000 | Produce | Small | Whatcom | Mariposa Farm requests $232,000 to expand their cold storage infrastructure, upgrade post-harvest handling equipment and acquire a critical forklift that will reduce hand-labor and physical strain on employees for overall improved workplace safety. It will increase the availability of Latinx-owned farm products in the wholesale food supply from buyers like the Puget Sound Food Hub Cooperative, PCC Markets and SCC. The grant funds will allow us to finish our building project this winter, upgrade our processing equipment as well as allow us to purchase additional equipment to better facilitate the moving of produce from farm to the kitchen. Dan’s 45-year career at this facility cultivated and nurtured the business entrenched with deep ties to the greater rural community. The facility has served generations of families well past its zenith reaching the point where major structural repairs are cost prohibitive in comparison to new constriction alternatives. Dan’s long-standing plan and vision is to revitalize the Colfax Meats business base and clientele with a transition to Palouse Custom Meats LLC in a newly constructed facility as rapidly as possible. |
Pangea Ferments | $103,000 | Produce | Small | Whatcom | Our most pressing project goals in the coming year include contract work for a new kitchen, a few pieces of kitchen equipment, a larger walk-in cooler and acquiring a refrigerated truck. These investments are critical to growing our business and creating some sustainable infrastructure. We've outgrown our current footprint and in most critical need of more refrigeration for storage as well as the ability to fill larger orders via cold transport. Creating raw foods of locally grown vegetables, means for us being able to scale up production during the growing window and having the means to cold hold enough product for wholesaling until the next season. These grant funds would go a long way towards helping us both grow our business and feed our local food economy. |
Patty Pan Co | $74,690 | Grain | Small | King | The Local Flour Tortilla Equipment Upgrade will increase Patty Pan's capacity to manufacture and distribute the flour tortillas that we make from Skagit-milled grain. We will use project funds to purchase a new tortilla press with an automated oven, rebuild our walk-in freezer so it is larger and more dependable, and provide promotional pricing to retailers to build our audience and our sales. These investments will increase both capacity and demand for local food products, allowing us to purchase more local ingredients while making our business more resilient. |
Port of Chehalis | $161,206 | Grain | Small | Lewis | Grant funds will be used to purchase a rail car mover to safely and efficiently position rail cars to be loaded with outgoing regionally produced small grains in support of the Southwest Washington Growers Cooperative; a producer owned business. Rail car mover will also be used to position cars to offload incoming feed for regional dairies, and livestock and poultry producers. There are currently no mid-tier public storage and transload facilities serving regional producers. The overall project will fill a critical gap in regional agricultural infrastructure, create access to market for regional producers, and strengthen the regional food system supply chain. The equipment to be purchased with grant funds is a critical component of the overall project. |
Puget Sound Food Hub Cooperative | $471,152 | Marketplace | Large | Skagit | PSFHC seeks funding to expand cold chain capacity within its sourcing and distribution area of the twelve-county region surrounding and incorporating Puget Sound. Funds will be used by PSFHC to expand its refrigerated truck fleet, expand cold and dry storage within PSFHC’s central warehouse in Mount Vernon, WA, and support improved efficiencies with our intake, inventory, and delivery by converting to paperless and barcode supported systems. Pure Nelida Farm LLC | $109,292 | Produce | Small | Skagit | If I receive this grant, I will purchase a refrigerated box truck and 40'x 8'x 9' walk-in cooler constructed inside of a shipping container. As part of the Viva Farms Incubator Program, I have access to their walk-in cooler. However, I specialize in strawberries and other berries that prefer to be held in a slightly warmer, dryer environment than the Viva Farms cooler. Having my own walk-in cooler will allow me to create the optimal environment to extend shelf life and improve quality. Then, I will be able to move product directly into the refrigerated truck for delivery. |
Radix Farm | $30,750 | Produce | Small | Chelan | The Radix Farm Packing Shed will be a remodel of our current garage (which can currently only serve as storage) and build-out of a new indoor/outdoor wash station, 10x12 cooler, small self-serve cooler, and simple commercial kitchen space. Ramstead Ranch, LLC | $233,267 | Meat | Small | Pend Oreille | We propose to expand onsite freezer space by adding a 13’x39’ freezer and updating our fulfillment station. We store our working inventory, packed weekly orders, and coolers for farmers markets onsite, in 14 upright and chest freezers, and an 8’x14’ walk-in freezer. Our onsite freezers are consistently overfull, hindering current operations and future growth. We use rented space in Spokane (which is closing) for the working inventory that doesn’t fit onsite and for longer term storage of seasonally-harvested meats (6-20 pallets). Added onsite freezer infrastructure is critical to our continued operations, especially given the loss of local, rented storage capacity. |
Red Truck Farm, LLC | $180,000 | Produce | Small | Clark | Red Truck Farm’s Local Food Infrastructure Project will focus grant activities on three primary areas of work: investing in distribution infrastructure with the purchase of an electric cargo van, expanding on-farm market infrastructure with an improved farm stand site, and improving a wash/pack and food storage facility on the farm. Salmon Creek Meats | $108,500 | Meat | Small | Lewis | The main challenge of operating a small meat processing business is the cost of building improvements and replacing aged equipment and accessing to funds to do so. Several pieces of equipment including a saw, a smoker, a grinder, a poultry scalder and a carcass receiving area need replacement. Replacement of equipment that has failed or is in danger of failure will allow us to resume processing poultry and continue to cure/smoke pork and process pigs and ensure we do not have any interruption in service to our customers due to equipment failure. |
Samish Bay LLC | $76,350 | Dairy | Small | Skagit | To handle increased volume we need to add more cold storage for cheese, expand our warm room to incubate larger volumes of yogurt, purchase labeling and filling machines for yogurt packing, more cheese molds to make more cheese per day, electric pallet jack and carts for moving product in the plant, a food safety audit as required by customers, improve computer networking for internal communication, a second vacuum sealing machine to package increased cheese volume, and repair production room floor to stay in compliance with food safety requirements. |
Sammamish Farms | $25,000 | Produce | Small | King | Funds for this project will be used to design and construct a cut greens washing station within a mobile container to satisfy department of Health and FSMA protocols for "Washed" lettuce and greens products. This will allow the farm to develop lines of ready-to-eat salads and packages to reduce kitchen prep time for the many chefs and home-based clients for the farm in addition to creating opportunity to sell to larger distributors. The key features of this station are a non-porous and washable floor, pest-prevention barriers in an enclosed space, and a tripple wash and spin-dry process in addition to a packaging space for leafy greens. |
Sariwa Farm LLC | $27,000 | Produce | Small | King | The funds will go towards three projects at Sariwa Farm in Woodinville, WA: 1) Fall 2022 - Build a winter storage infrastructure for curing and drying raw agricultural products in order to increase shelf life. 2) Winter 2022 - Conduct research and development by purchasing supplies for testing and production of culturally relevant value-added products. 3) Spring 2023 - Develop a farm and food website to solidify online presence and expand community engagement and market sales. Receiving this grant would improve our ability and the farms we custom process for to be more competitive in the market place and bring new products to market. With an increase in automation and scale there is the possibility to also process products for many more small to mid size farms in our region. |
Saxon Meatsmiths LLC (dba Osprey Hill Butchery) | $75,000 | Meat | Small | Whatcom | Our newly designed shipping-container facility was delivered to the farm in June and both utility hookups and interior finish work is under way. If selected for this grant, we will use the funds to purchase: Interior equipment, an on-demand hot water heater, an ultra-efficient outdoor walk-in freezer, a back-up generator, an awning over the kill-side, a poured concrete pad around exterior of facility, a forklift, a Bastone plumbed portable restroom, and a compost facility. Second Mile Marketplace and Food Hub | $27,000 | Marketplace | Small | Clark | Part 1 - Repair and replace existing refrigeration units. We are busting at the seams with cold storage needs and need to provide upkeep to 2 existing units (1 freezer unit, 1 refer unit.) With so many additional requests from farmers, we'd want to add at least one more freezer and one more refrigerator. Part 2 - Provide additional processing capabilities by adding a freeze drier and a covered space for smoking and grilling (especially peppers) |
Sequim Bee Farm | $60,000 | Honey | Small | Clallam | Due to the pandemic, the completion of our barn stalled and costs escalated, construction ground to a halt. We need to complete our commercial kitchen to reapply for our processing license to produce value-added products as well as open the kitchen to our small farm neighbors. We need to complete our honey house for harvesting, and make the property safe for our community farmstand. We need to purchase the 'guts' of the kitchen with counters, sinks, refrigeration, and warming equipment; drywall and insulation of the honey extraction barn; farm and driveway safety improvements as we expand our agrotourism. |

Simple Goodness Farm, LLC | $71,650 | Produce | Small | Pierce | The project proposed in this grant application is the final step in getting a fully functional production kitchen up and running for our business. With grant funding we will purchase cooking and bottling equipment that will match the equipment we are currently using at our co-packing kitchen. This will allow us to produce our existing product line to keep up with current demand, expand our product line and co-pack for other farmers and food manufacturers who don't have access to the specialized equipment needed to make shelf-stable hot fill food products. |
SisterLand Farms LLC | $167,000 | Produce | Small | Clallam | SisterLand Farms requests funds to support every aspect of post-harvest production; streamlining and exponentially increasing the capacity of our farm to serve its public and peers. The funded projects would include scaled construction of an extant wash station, the building of dedicated cold storage and curing spaces, the purchase of a desperately-needed produce delivery vehicle, the overhaul of our modest market booth, display storage, and packing supplies, and the staff hours to accomplish expansion of community programs and cooperative retail/fair/educational events. |
Skokomish Valley Farms LLC | $210,000 | Meat | Small | Mason | We would like to significantly increase the size of our meat bird enterprise to fill the large supply-side hole left when G&H Pastured Poultry and Chehalis Valley Farm stopped processing chickens. We've been processing and selling some chickens and turkeys using the Mason Conservation District's mobile processing equipment, but need a bigger, more efficient processing area with an ice machine, vacuum sealer, freezer unit, refrigerator unit, and refrigerated truck/van to make the next step. The grant will enable us to obtain a Food Processor License and greatly expand the number of birds we can process, our market opportunities, and our product offerings. We intend to make the facility available to other local farmers on our non-processing days. |
Smokey Ridge Meats | $250,000 | Meat | Large | Stevens | Most of the temperature control systems in our facility are old and antiquated. Of the seven independent cooling systems that run continuously, only two have been updated since Smokey Ridge began operating 25+ years ago and many of our compressors were at least a decade old at that time. They run using refrigerant that is becoming obsolete and struggle to keep up, especially in the hot summer months despite efforts to keep them cool with an intricate system of fans and sprinklers. Replacing our old cooling systems with new systems that are more reliable and efficient, and better suited for the size of facility, would contribute tremendously to the stability of our business. |
Smoot's Flavor Farm, LLC | $18,800 | Produce | Small | Whitman | I intend to build a food-safe storage facility for our value-added goods. For proper dried herb storage (and other goods), they need to be stored in a dry, dark, and relatively cool location. In order to achieve this while also being conscientious regarding resource consumption and energy efficiency, I intend to purchase and repurpose a 20 foot refrigerated shipping container. I repurposed a 40 foot refrigerated container for my specialty processing facility and it is able to stay cool, dry and completely dark without additional energy inputs. This larger storage facility would enable me to store more goods for marketing throughout the year. |
SnoValley Tilth | $24,409 | Produce | Small | King | This project will fund the purchase and installation of improved wash and pack station equipment and infrastructure to meet GAP and FISMA requirements and the installation of shelving units in a recently renovated cold-storage facility at an incubator farm benefitting multiple farm businesses. |
Snowgrass Farm | $159,690 | Produce | Small | Kittitas | Snowgrass Farm seeks to improve basic infrastructure that will increase farm productivity and efficiency and increase our accessibility to the community. This involves constructing buildings to house a wash station, farm stand and walk-in cooler. These new structures will protect farm staff and customers from the elements, particularly the wind and hot sun. A permanent walk-in cooler will increase storage capacity to meet current and future production needs while cooling produce more efficiently. We also seek to purchase planting, propagation, harvest, washing and packing tools and supplies that will improve the farm’s production capacity, productivity and distribution. |
SoulCedar Farm LLC | $181,550 | Produce | Small | Jefferson | Funding from this grant will enable us to purchase a mobile Commercial kitchen trailer that we can utilize for our processing needs and open up for community use. Commercial kitchen space is limited in our small town, and this mobile commercial kitchen would be a huge community resource. I would also use a portion of grant funding for specific long term microbe testing for our line of Shrubs, to ensure shelf stability without processing them in a hot-fill hold manner. This would allow us to produce a healthier product. |
Southwest Washington Growers Co Operative | $18,061 | Marketplace | Small | Lewis | This proposal includes repairs to the hub’s warehouse roof and asphalt floor sealant to improve sanitation as part of a food safety plan and ensure compliance with all state, federal, and local health codes. Equipment purchases include two meat freezers; insulated bags, totes, boxes and box liners; conveyors and a pallet jack to improve warehouse capacity and efficiency. Technology upgrades include a bluetooth printer, WIFI connection, and annual purchase of Local Food Marketplace, and an upgrade to their new subscription-builder module which would improve distribution and warehouse efficiency. |
Space Twins Provisions | $16,400 | Produce | Small | Jefferson | As a collaborative farm producing various perishable products, we need more cold storage to preserve our harvests and increase our ability to distribute our products to our local community. With grant funds, we plan to purchase a larger walk-in refrigerator (10'x12') to be installed centrally on the farm in our shop space adjacent to our existing 8'x8' cooler so that it is an accessible hub for our various farm ventures to utilize. Increasing our cold storage on site will support each of us as producers of vegetables, flowers, and bread to scale our production, grow our businesses, and contribute more substantially to our local food system. |
Steel Wheel Farm LLC | $32,400 | Grain | Small | King | If awarded this grant, Steel Wheel Farm would use funds to purchase much needed tools and storage to build a hyper-local grain economy in the Snoqualmie valley. We are looking to purchase a dry storage container for holding grain, a mobile grain car to transport grain to the cleaning station, 2 grain augers to move the grains from cleaner to bins, a grain pre-cleaner to sift and clean the grains, and a Grain roller/flaker to create rolled oats and flaked corn. These purchases would help strengthen the local food supply chain, support farm diversity and farm stability. |
Steensma Creamery | $148,285 | Dairy | Small | Whatcom | I am seeking funding for infrastructure to grow Steensma Creamery’s production capacity, diversity our product line, and strengthen local distribution channels. 1. Grow Production Capacity. Skyr straining capacity is currently our biggest production bottleneck. We could increase this capacity with the purchase of more drain tables. 2. Diversify Product Line. A cream separator and a stand mixer would enable us to offer more products, including low fat skyr, butter and sour cream. 3. Strengthen Distribution. A lack of vehicles severely limits our ability to distribute to farmers markets and local retailers. I wish to purchase electric delivery vans to bring more product to local consumers. |
stutzman ranch | $104,900 | Produce | Small | chelan | Our plan is to purchase and build a small 30X40 foot pole building. This new climate-controlled space will be used for packaging fruit, retail space for selling fresh fruit and check-out location for U-pick clientele. This building will also contain a restroom for customers and employees as we now rely on portable toilets. Presently all packing and fruit sales is done in open air lean-tos. Our goal is to improve food safety and increase customer/employee safety by having a sealed, climate-controlled area to eliminate wind-blown dust and vertebrate pest problems such as mice and birds. |
Sunset Highway Farm llc | $224,000 | Produce | Small | Spokane | The grant funds will be put toward the building of a post harvest processing and storage facility that will help us achieve the ability to process eggs, produce, and poultry in a greater and safer capacity. Included in this build will be a wash station and commercial kitchen for the purpose of processing meat, produce, and goods to the standard of the WSDA's Food Processor License, a walk in cooler that will help us increase the integrity of our produce by the ability to harvest and store it at it's peak readiness, and a packing room that will allow us to increase the quantity of produce we can process. This facility will drastically increase our variety of meat, produce and food products available, our market access and it will benefit Washington consumers with more options to buy locally produced products. |
Sustainable Connections dba Cloud Mountain Farm Center | $140,275 | Produce | Small | Whatcom | We plan to purchase and install a blast freezer with swinging door, as well as a storage freezer with pallet door inside the footprint of the existing WSDA processing room. Supplemental but necessary supporting infrastructure for value-added frozen production and storage includes a pallet scale, nimble and efficient forklift, and backup (standby) generator to ensure there is no loss of product during seasonal weather extremes. Adding blast freezing capacity creates access to the most basic form of food processing and preservation for our own production and the many businesses who aggregate and process at CMFC. The associated storage offers local producers capacity to store, aggregate, and distribute a wider range of products year-round. At this time, there is no communally available small scale blast freezer in east Whatcom County, nor is there substantial storage for lightly processed or value-added frozen product for local and regional distribution. |
Sweet Stuff Creations at Halbig Family Farm | $22,000 | Produce | Small | Spokane | We would like to build a or install a walk in Food Storage Cooler/refrigeration room, and purchase an additional Freeze Dryer and equipment for preserving our harvest. We are currently using 3 refrigerators and 1 freeze dryer which are quickly overwhelmed during harvest meaning much of our harvest is donated or goes to waste. Additionally, additional farm implements would be helpful for improving/increasing our output. |
THE CROWS FARM of SKAGIT LLC | $26,073 | Produce | Small | Skagit | We plan to purchase a used forklift and a conveyor wash line with the grant funds. Our project entails building infrastructure for a four season pack shed. Our Fall and Winter months harvests are mainly devoted to winter squash, cabbages and chicories. For example, about 20% of our organic farm is dedicated to winter squash production, we plan to harvest over 80,000 pounds this season A forklift would greatly improve our ability to harvest and move our winter squash crop into storage safely, timely and efficiently. A conveyor wash line would allow us to process our winter squash crop effectively getting it market ready. |
The Farmhouse on Green Bluff | $70,600 | Marketplace | Small | Spokane | We are looking to expand our retail space for other local farms that do not have direct market access. In particular, we would like to add the ability to sell temperature controlled items (beef, pork, eggs & milk). In order to accomplish this, we would need to add commercial coolers to our store front and obtain a vehicle with refrigeration (to safely pick-up these goods and deliver them to our storefront). |
Thiessen Beef, LLC (DBA Thiessen Ranch) | $90,627 | Meat | Small | Walla Walla | In order to maximize our potential and provide beef to more consumers in our region, we need to have additional on-site freezer storage. Currently, we have one 20 foot freezer container in our shop that we purchased this year, but it was built to accommodate two freezers. Additionally, a refer/freezer truck would greatly aid is the delivery of beef to our ranch from the butcher, and from our ranch to consumers around the region. |
Timeless Villages LLC | $113,395 | Produce | Small | King | Our project will build infrastructure for post-harvest processing and storage of specialty crops, cut flowers, dairy, meat and other agriculture products, including a washing and packing facility, a cold storage unit, a freezer unit and a mobile cold storage vehicle (van). This will allow our current farmer partners to properly wash, pack, and store crops and increase product distribution volumes and distances. These facilities will allow us to lease land at low cost to other farmers who have expressed interest in leasing on the property but have been blocked by the lack of current infrastructure for post-harvest processing and storage. |
TLC Custom Meats Inc | $75,000 | Meat | Small | Adams | We would use the funds to upgrade our electrical service, transfer the circuits to a new panel, and replace the roof. Our current electrical panel is located in the cutting room; we would move it while upgrading the electrical service as it is currently at maximum capacity and we can not add any more equipment/refrigeration. The roof on the building is the original and needs to be replaced, as it is starting to rust away in spots. |
TOJO Properties, LLC | $177,000 | Produce | Small | King | While we made a significant investment in our initial buildout and have plenty of space and time available for additional Users, improvements are still needed to provide the requisite infrastructure accommodate and attract more small food businesses. This project has three main areas of focus: (1) improving air quality, flow, and circulation to minimize yeast, mold and airborne disease particles as a result of increased usage of the facility; (2) adding equipment and infrastructure needed to attract new Users and better accommodate existing Users; (3) developing a marketing strategy and program to get the word out about our space. |
Twin Brook Creamery | $100,000 | Dairy | Small | Whatcom | We would like to purchase a larger refrigerated box truck as our small truck when we add these other farm on is getting to small. In addition to that it is a year 2000 Freightliner so it's days are getting to be numbered. |

Washington Hmong Farmers Cooperative | $246,594 | Produce | Small | King | We intend to offer our farmers access to cold storage, a dehydrator, a freeze dryer and packaging supplies. This equipment will allow our farmers to turn herbs, fruits and vegetables into value added crops such as dried herbs, freeze dried berries and store crops until they can be sold. In addition, this grant funding will allow us to hire a full-time cooperative manager and contract with a grant writer to continue to grow our cooperative. |
Wear's Custom Cuts LLC | $100,000 | Meat | Small | Spokane | This project involves updating our mobile slaughter truck. We remain limited to our service areas and productivity with dated equipment. We plan to purchase the truck itself and all of the specialized additions required for operating. |
Whidbey Island Grown Cooperative | $94,444 | Marketplace | Small | Island | To meet growing winter demand for Whidbey products, WIGC will create a centrally located cooler facility to provide low-cost cold storage rental space for our producers; a critical market void not available elsewhere on Whidbey. We will purchase two refrigerated shipping containers, hire a licensed contractor and electrician to assemble and prepare the units, and purchase necessary, regulatory compliant, cold storage fixtures and packing supplies. Winding Road Farm | $70,000 | Produce | Small | Whatcom | We seek funds to purchase equipment and modify infrastructure to improve our ability to handle, pack, store, and distribute our fruit. Grants funds will be used to buy and install a cooling facility in our barn and purchase an electric forklift, macro bins, processing tables, shelving, and packing boxes. Improved post-harvest capability improves our own farm’s ability to service existing customers and expand further into the wholesale market. The facility also adds to the County’s limited cold storage options for small producers and positions us to serve as an aggregation site for farmers markets or other collective distribution schemes. |
Windy N Ranch LLC | $109,500 | Meat | Small | Kittitas | Our goal is to transition our existing WSDA/FSIS butcher shop to a Certified Organic USDA facility where we can process USDA meats for ourselves and small businesses in the area, such as Mt. Woodland Creek Honey Farm | $13,500 | Honey | Small | Thurston | If awarded this grant we would upgrade our current honey production to help bring more value-added honey products to market with the acquisition of an uncapping machine and capping spinner to extract more honey and process wax capping more efficiently. A larger volume stainless steel holding and bottling tank for honey bottling to streamline our bottling process. A freezer to help manage wax moth and for storage of honeycomb and honey products for sale. |
Wynooche Valley Meats | $75,000 | Meat | Small | Grays Harbor | We would complete: the inhouse slaughter facility (headgate, lift wench I-beams, carcass splitting saw, covered holding pens, rollup door and holding pen concrete, lighting, upgrade 3 phase electrical panel and roto phase); repair production area floors; upgrade production equipment (band saw, loafing machine, more meat trolleys) and production dry storage capacity; build a website. These additions, upgrades, and repairs would complete this facility as a turn-key, vertically integrated regional custom meat shop. It would put the facility in a position to further expand and grow into a USDA inspected facility; and to further grow in the smoked meats/ foods category. |
