Pesticide Storage

Pesticide Storage Requirements

Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) requires appropriate storage of pesticides and their containers unless containers are triple-rinsed. Storage of pesticides varies depending on the label signal word or bulk quantities. Any registered pesticide transported or held in individual containers or undivided quantities, greater than 55 gallons of liquid or 100 pounds of net dry weight, is considered a bulk pesticide.

Pesticide Storage and Signal Words

Pesticides with label signal words such as “caution”, “warning”, or “danger”, require secure storage out of reach of children. Pesticides with signal words “danger/poison” require locked and posted enclosures. The enclosures should prevent the entry of children, unauthorized individuals, livestock, or other animals. Posting warning signs is required when storing pesticides with “danger/poison” signal words.

Acceptable Enclosures For All Signal Words

  • A locked, closed vehicle
  • A locked, closed trailer
  • Building, room, or a fence at least six feet high
  • Unattended truck or trailer with solid side racks and a secured tailgate at least six feet above the ground
  • Bulk storage containers 50 gallons and larger with tight screw-types bungs and/or secured locked valves
