Chemigation and Fertigation

What is Chemigation and Fertigation?

Chemigation is the application of pesticides using an irrigation system. Pesticides include herbicides, insecticides, fungicides, rodenticides, fumigants, spray adjuvants, and plant growth regulators. Fertigation is the use of fertilizers or other soil amendments using an irrigation system. Applying pesticides or fertilizers through an irrigation system is effective when treating large areas or fields.

LABEL REQUIREMENTS

Only pesticides registered for chemigation can be used in irrigation systems. The pesticide label will state the registration status and identify approved irrigation systems, safety measures, and worker protection requirements. The installation of a backflow safety device and system interlocks is required for irrigation systems before the addition of pesticides is allowed.

Fertilizer product labels do not have the same use directions for application as pesticides. Although, the same backflow prevention system and interlock device is required before application. The purpose of these rules is to protect human health, groundwater, and the environment from hazardous chemicals. Only certified applicators or those under the supervision of a certified applicator can apply pesticides through an irrigation system.
