Yams are a type of an underground tuber plant that appear similar to sweet potatoes, but the two are not related. As a staple food of West Africa, they are celebrated at the start of each harvesting season and are seen as a symbol of the abundance of fresh food.
As a great source of complex carbohydrates, yams are considered a high-energy food.
