Biofuels Quality

The WSDA Motor Fuel Quality Program tests fuels and inspects businesses marketing motor fuels, including biofuels, at the production, distribution and retail levels, and encourages and supports the production and use of biofuels in Washington State.

Quality Standards and Testing

WSDA inspectors collect samples of gasoline, diesel, and biofuels across the state which are tested in the field or sent to a laboratory for detailed analysis. Testing determines compliance with motor fuel specifications of ASTM and confirms the fuel meets state labeling requirements.

Labeling Requirements

All motor fuels containing biofuels must be properly labeled.

  • Gasoline containing up to 10% ethanol must be labeled "Contains up to 10% Ethanol"
  • Diesel containing up to 5% biodiesel must be labeled "May contain up to 5% Biodiesel"
  • Diesel containing 5% or more biodiesel must be labeled with the volume percentage of biodiesel such as B5 Biodiesel Blend or B20 Biodiesel Blend
