Brassica Seed Production

For more information, e-mail us or call (360) 902-1812.

To support oilseed production while protecting the state's vegetable seed industry, a state law was enacted in 2007 and WSDA adopted rules in January 2008 for the orderly production of brassica seed crops (e.g., canola and cabbage). For the vegetable seed industry, these rules decrease the potential for genetic crosses and associated loss of quality, purity, and value of the seed produced. For oilseed producers, the rules clarify cropping opportunities.  The rules:

  1. Establish two Brassica seed production districts. District 1 includes areas in five northwest counties; District 2 includes portions of Grant and Adams counties in eastern Washington.
  2. Specify general requirements for growing, transporting or processing Brassica seed crops within the production districts.
  3. Specify requirements for producing different types of Brassica seed crops in each production district or subdistrict.
  4. Establish a continuing Brassica work group.
