Updated 05/13/09Comparison of the Gypsy Moth and Tent CaterpillarFor more information, e-mail us or call (800) 443-6684. The Western Tent Caterpillar is very common in western Washington and much less destructive. It is often mistaken for the gypsy moth.
Rows of orange patches along their back distinguishes tent caterpillars from gypsy moths. Gypsy moth caterpillars are grayish with five pairs of blue spots and six pairs of red spots along their backs.
