In 1992, the legislature passed a law which allows pesticide sensitive individuals to submit information to the department, be placed upon a registry, and be contacted by the applicator prior to a pesticide application to a landscape or right-of-way which is adjacent to their principal place of residence.

Information for Pesticide Sensitive Individuals

Notification of Pesticide-Sensitive Individuals (RCW 17.21.430)

  • Applicators are required to notify those on the list when making ornamental or right-of-way applications adjacent to their property.
  • Notification of the date and approximate time of the application shall be made in writing, in person or by telephone.
  • This notification must be at least two hours prior to the application except in the case of an immediate service call in which case notification can be made at the time of the application.
  • In the event a certified applicator is unable to provide prior notification because of the absence or inaccessibility of the individual, the applicator shall leave a written notice at the residence of the individual listed on the pesticide-sensitive list at the time of the application.
  • If a person on the pesticide-sensitive list lives in a multi-family dwelling such as an apartment or condominium, the applicator shall notify the person on the list or shall advise the manager or other property owner's representative to notify the person on the list of the application.

The Registration of Pesticide Sensitive Individuals Fact Sheet provides guidance for those who would like to be placed on the registry and for applicators who must notify those on the list.

The Pesticide Sensitive Individual Application Form must be completed by the pesticide sensitive individual with all requested information including a signature from a physician who currently holds a license to practice medicine in Washington State. Incomplete applications or inaccurate information may interfere with the ability to provide adequate notification.

Once an individual is on the registry, a Pesticide Sensitive Individual Renewal Form must be completed annually by the pesticide sensitive individual. A physician's signature is not required on the renewal form.
