The Fertilizer Bulk Storage and Operational Area Containment Rules (WAC 16-201) were effective March 1, 1994. As of March 1, 1999, all parts of the rule are in effect. Portions of the rule were updated December 18, 2000. These rules establish the requirements for which containment is required for fertilizers. The fact sheet Important Information Concerning Secondary Containment of Bulk Pesticides, Fertilizers and Operational Area Containment may help you determine if these rules apply to you.

In January, 2001, The Office of Solid Waste and Emergency Response of the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency issued an informative report on failed fertilizer storage tanks which included history of accidents, hazard awareness and prevention, and information resources.
