State Veterinarian

State Veterinarian:  Issues permits for the sale and distribution of veterinary biologics, including one fully licensed West Nile virus equine vaccine available only to licensed veterinarians.  Enforces the animal disease reporting required of veterinarians, veterinary laboratories and others.  Keeps statistics on incidence of West Nile virus cases in horses.  Maintains the animal health web site, including weekly updates.  Issues news releases on equine cases in each county and provides information to large animal and mixed practice veterinarians.

Pesticide Management

Ensure that pesticides are used safely and legally.

Licensing

License applicators and ensure that they receive required continuing education.   Provide training and outreach materials to farmworkers who work with pesticides.

Registration

Register pesticide products.  Manage labeling of pesticides.  Issue experimental use permits for new pesticides or uses.  Addresses potential impact of pesticides on threatened and endangered species.  Work with mosquito control districts to ensure that best management practices are effective and available to other districts.

Compliance

Enforce compliance with pesticide laws and rules to prevent human exposure, damage to crops and animals, and environmental contamination.  Investigate complaints of possible misuse. Determine if pesticides are being stored, applied, disposed, transported and distributed in accordance with state and federal laws.
