Inspections

Nutrient Management inspectors conduct a routine inspection of each cow dairy at least once every 22 months. Inspectors look at facilities, land applications, and crop records for risks of nutrients impacting either ground or surface water quality.

In addition to routine inspections, the inspectors:

  • Inspect in response to complaints for dairy and some other livestock operations
  • Assess the conditions of many lagoons prior to the winter storage period
  • Develop and help implement enforcement actions when needed to achieve compliance
  • Inspect dairies in response to requests from Ecology for areas with watershed clean up plans
  • Refer dairies to local Conservation Districts for technical assistance when needed
  • May refer non-dairy sites to conservation districts, local agencies or Department of Ecology for assistance or follow-up.

Staff coordinates with other technical and resource agencies to identify and address issues and tools needed to aid operators.
