Over the past two years, the WSDA Avian Health Program educating producers about Avian Influenza and proper poultry practices to decrease avian diseases, as well as on-going Avian Influenza surveillance around Washington State.


The WSDA focuses on educating producers about:

Avian Influenza (AI):

Ongoing AI surveillance occurs at:
  • Livestock markets/auctions
  • County and community fairs and bird shows
  • Farmer's markets
  • Backyard flocks
  • Game bird production facilities
  • National Poultry Improvement Plan (NPIP) participants/commercial operations
  • Sick bird calls
  • Other small producers
In 2008, WSDA Avian Health Program took 10,609 samples for AI testing.

To date, H5/H7 Avian Influenza has not been found in Washington in domestic birds.

Salmonella Pullorum-Typhoid (P-T):

Salmonella Pullorum Typhoid is a bacterial disease which can produce significant mortalities in chicken, turkey and game bird flocks.
Ongoing P-T surveillance occurs at: In 2008, it became mandatory that all poultry going to exhibit be P-T tested 90 days prior to going to exhibit as stated in WAC 16-59-030. (external site) If birds are from a NPIP flock, they do not need to be P-T tested prior to going to the fair. During the 2008 fair season, WSDA tested birds for P-T and AI at 17 fairs with 100 or more birds. Birds that were purchased from NPIP sources, feed stores or hatcheries did not need to be tested for P-T this year.
  • 925 birds were tested for P-T
  • 925 birds were tested for AI
NPIP requirements, NPIP flocks must be tested for P-T on an annual basis.In 2008, WSDA P-T tested 1,089 birds for NPIP. In 2007, WSDA P-T tested 827 birds for NPIP.
