In 2006, Legislature passed Substitute House Bill (SHB) 3033 calling for the creation of a cattle advisory group to make recommendations regarding implementation of the National Animal Identification System (NAIS) in Washington State.

The Cattle Advisory Group:

evaluated the requirements of the federal program
examined approaches being taken by other states
evaluated demonstration projects
made recommendations on how NAIS should be implemented in Washington State
recommended funding sources and amounts
consulted with the Office of Financial Management
submitted a report to the Legislature by December 1, 2006

On June 12, 2006, Director Loveland appointed 20 members from different segments of the cattle industry, including beef producers, dairy producers, feeders, renderers, livestock transporters, sale yard representatives, elected officials and tribal representatives.

On September 24, 2007, WSDA staff presented the members of the House of Representatives with
the final Cattle Identification Report.
