2005 Drought
"Under the state's drought plan, one of the Washington State Department of Agriculture's primary roles is to coordinate federal, state, and local drought relief efforts for the agricultural community. We need to know what's going on in the fields and the farms so that we can advise Governor Gregoire and the Secretary of Agriculture on any actions they can take to mitigate the problem. Our most important responsibility is to protect and maintain agriculture as a viable industry in this state."
                                                  Valoria Loveland, Director

On March 10 Governor Gregoire declared a statewide declaration of drought emergency. Her decision was based on record low snow pack in the mountains and minimum flows in many rivers across the state. As of April 1st:

  • Mountain snow pack was 26% of average
  • Precipitation was between 51 and 76% of average
  • Stream flows were between 22 and 90% of average
The Washington State Department of Agriculture continues to work with our stakeholders in monitoring drought conditions and responding to emerging issues.
